Cyclamen
Cyclamen (Cyclamen persicum) is a beautiful, cool-season houseplant prized for its colorful, upswept flowers and heart-shaped leaves with unique patterns.
Light
Preferred Light: Bright, indirect light.
Placement: Near a north or east-facing window is ideal. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.
Watering
Water when the top 1–2 inches of soil feel dry.
Water thoroughly, preferably from the base (bottom-watering) to avoid wetting the crown or foliage, which can lead to rot.
Typically every 7–10 days during active growth; reduce watering significantly during dormancy.
Fertilization
Frequency: Every 2–4 weeks during the growing and flowering period (fall and winter).
Use a low-nitrogen, water-soluble fertilizer, such as one with an NPK ratio of 10-10-10.
Avoid fertilizing during dormancy or over-fertilizing, as this can harm the plant.
Flowering
Cyclamen typically blooms from late fall to early spring.
Encouraging Blooms: Provide bright, indirect light, cool temperatures (50–68°F) and consistent watering.
Remove spent flowers and yellowing leaves to encourage more blooms.
Dormancy
Cyclamen enters dormancy after flowering (late spring to early summer).
During this period:
Stop fertilizing and reduce watering.
Place the plant in a cool, dry location until new growth appears in the fall.
