Dieffenbachia

Dieffenbachia (Dieffenbachia spp.), commonly known as Dumb Cane, is a tropical houseplant admired for its striking, variegated foliage and easy-going nature.

Light

  • Preferred Light: Bright, indirect light.

  • Placement: Near an east or north-facing window. It can tolerate low light but may lose some of its vibrant variegation. Avoid direct sunlight, which can scorch the leaves.

Watering

  • Water when the top 2–3 inches of soil feel dry.

  • Water thoroughly until it drains out of the bottom of the pot, then discard any excess water.

  • Frequency: Typically every 7–10 days, depending on light, temperature, and humidity.

Fertilization

  • Frequency: Every 4–6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer).

  • Use a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer with an NPK ratio of 10-10-10 or 20-20-20.

  • Avoid: Fertilizing in fall and winter when the plant's growth slows.

Additional Tips

  • Humidity: Prefers moderate to high humidity. Increase humidity by misting, using a humidifier, or placing the plant on a pebble tray.

  • Pruning: Remove yellowing or damaged leaves regularly to maintain the plant's appearance.

  • Toxicity: Dieffenbachia is toxic to pets and humans if ingested, causing irritation or swelling. Handle with care.
