African Violet
African violets (Saintpaulia) are popular houseplants known for their beautiful, colorful flowers and compact size.
Light
Preferred light: Bright, indirect light.
Placement: Near an east or west-facing window is ideal. If the light is too low, the plant may become leggy and produce fewer flowers.
Watering
Water when the top 1–2 inches of soil feel dry. Water thoroughly, but make sure the pot has drainage to prevent water from sitting at the bottom.
Water Typically, every 5-7 days, but it varies depending on temperature and humidity.
Try to avoid getting any water on the plants foliage
Soil
Use a Well-draining, lightweight potting mix. African violet mixes are available, or you can use a general houseplant mix with added perlite or sand for better drainage.
Fertilization
Fertilizing frequency should be about every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced fertilizer formulated for flowering houseplants.
Use a water-soluble fertilizer with a balanced NPK ratio (e.g., 14-12-14) or one specifically for African violets.
Avoid Over-fertilizing, as this can lead to salt buildup and damage the plant.
Flowering
African violets typically bloom year-round with proper care, although they may have a peak blooming period.
To help encourage blooms keep them in optimal light, avoid drastic temperature changes, and avoid over-fertilizing, especially with nitrogen-heavy fertilizers that encourage foliage growth over flowers.
