Palm Ponytail

The Ponytail Palm (Beaucarnea recurvata), also known as the Elephant Foot Palm, is a unique and drought-tolerant plant known for its bulbous trunk and cascading, strap-like leaves. It’s an excellent choice for both beginners and seasoned plant enthusiasts.

Light

  • Thrives in bright, indirect light.

  • Can tolerate direct sunlight for a few hours daily.

  • Low light is acceptable but may slow growth.

Watering

  • Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings.

  • Water sparingly, as the bulbous trunk stores water—overwatering can lead to root rot.

  • Reduce watering in winter when the plant is dormant.

Temperature

  • Ideal temperature: 60–80°F.

  • Can tolerate temperatures as low as 50°F but avoid frost.

  • Keep away from cold drafts, heaters, and air conditioners.

Fertilizing

  • Feed during the growing season (spring–summer) with a diluted, balanced liquid fertilizer once a month.

  • Do not fertilize in fall and winter when growth slows.
