Poinsettia
Location
Place your new poinsettia in a warm bright room inside your home where it will receive at least 6 hours of filtered sunlight daily.
Poinsettias are native to Mexico, so bright light and cool nights will help maintain brightly colored bracts.
Poinsettias prefer moderate home temperatures of 60-75°F, and should be protected from cold drafts so keep them away from doorways.
Watering and Fertilization
Water your poinsettia thoroughly when the soil is dry to the touch or if the pot feels light when lifted.
When watering, make sure to water until it comes out of the drainage hole, and don’t let the pot sit in excess water.
Your poinsettia will not need fertilizing during the holidays. If you overwinter it, you’ll need to start fertilizing when you see new growth in late winter/early spring. An all-purpose fertilizer at half-strength will do the trick, and we’ve got lots of options here at The Wedge!
Continuing Care
Make sure your poinsettia stays warm. Poinsettias suffer damage if they are exposed to temperatures below 50°F, and will die if exposed to 32°F.
Get rid of any wilting brown or yellow leaves/bracts to avoid fungus and pests.
Poinsettias contain a sticky white sap that can cause a skin rash, so gloves are recommended when working with these plants. Avoid contact with eyes and mouth.
